Tests loom for popular UK PM Burnham as parliament returns

As parliament returns from its summer break, Burnham will face the challenge of addressing more complex issues. Burnham's government will unveil its stance on releasing thousands of prisoners early to alleviate overcrowding in prisons, as well as his response to the weekly grilling session.

Burnham must navigate a range of sensitive matters, including welfare reform, social care funding, and the scrapping of jury trials for many offenses. One of the most contentious issues is whether to proceed with drilling at the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields in the North Sea, a decision that could alienate either the unions or Labour net-zero supporters.

Burnham will also host his first European leader, French President Emmanuel Macron, this week, as he contemplates the future of Britain's relationship with the European bloc. While Burnham has expressed a desire to be more closely aligned with the EU, he has ruled out rejoining the single market, customs union, or allowing freedom of movement.
