Steelers trade RB Kaleb Johnson to Packers for 2028 sixth-round draft pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded running back Kaleb Johnson to the Green Bay Packers for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick. The move aims to bolster the Packers' backfield, especially considering the uncertain future of three-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs. Johnson, a third-round pick from 2025, will bring fresh talent to Green Bay.

Jacobs was placed on the commissioner's exempt list on Sunday following his arrest on May 1st for a misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property after a physical altercation with his girlfriend. This development raises questions about Jacobs' availability in 2026 and his future with the Packers. The depth chart behind Jacobs previously included MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks.

Johnson, an Iowa product, had a challenging rookie season, rushing for 28 yards on 28 attempts and securing just 50 offensive snaps in 10 games. His most notable performance was a botched kickoff return in Week 2 against Seattle, where he allowed the Seahawks to recover the ball in the end zone for a critical play in the Steelers' loss.

Following this incident, Johnson's special teams duties were terminated by then-coach Mike Tomlin. To fill the void left by Johnson, the Steelers signed veteran back Rico Dowdle, who will partner with Jaylen Warren.
