Russia Vows Major Strikes on Ukrainian Energy Grid

The Russian Ministry of Defense warned on Sunday that it is set to carry out "massive strikes" against Ukraine's energy systems. The announcement was made via the ministry's Telegram channel, where officials justified the strikes as retribution for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries and commercial hubs - which Moscow deemed as assaults on "civilian infrastructure".

This threat emerges amid Russia's ongoing struggles with economic and logistical challenges stemming from Ukrainian deep strikes aimed at crippling the Russian economy and fuel production.

According to Bloomberg, Ukrainian forces have been repeatedly targeting Russian oil refineries during August, marking the highest monthly strike count in recent history. These attacks have significantly impacted Russia's fuel market, reducing refining capacity to its lowest level in two decades and decreasing domestic gasoline supplies by 20%. Consequently, the Russian government has had to extend a ban on the export of diesel, marine fuel, and gas oil until September 30 to counteract the resulting retail shortages.

In addition to fuel infrastructure, Ukrainian forces have been increasingly targeting major commercial and military logistics networks within Russian territory. Wildberries, the leading e-commerce platform in Russia, has been a frequent target, with eight of its ten largest warehouses hit since mid-July. President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated that a single strike on a Wildberries facility resulted in approximately 1 trillion rubles ($12.5 billion) in direct damages.

On Saturday, Ukrainian drones attacked large logistics centers operated by the online retailer Ozon and electronics chain DNS in the Rostov region. This led to the declaration of a regional state of emergency due to supply chain disruptions caused by the attacks.
