Putin says Russia holds world's second-largest coal reserves

MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin declared Russia possesses the world's second-largest coal reserves and remains a global market leader despite industry challenges, according to Russian News Agency TASS. The nation's coal, coke, iron ore, and other minerals, generously provided by nature, continue to be foundational to its economy.

Russia holds the second-largest coal reserves globally, ranks third in coal exports, and sixth in production. The president emphasized this in a video message to miners on Miner's Day, stating that Russia currently meets domestic demand for coking and thermal coal. Last year, Russia produced 440 million metric tons of coal, maintaining production levels and increasing labor productivity by 18% over five years.

Putin affirmed the industry's commitment to developing the coal sector, addressing transportation logistics optimization, workplace safety, miners' families' quality of life, and improving cities and towns. He highlighted that modern coal mining is an industry of the future due to miners' successful adoption of digital innovations and high-performance equipment. Additionally, Putin stressed the importance of workforce training and raising the prestige of mining professions.
