Parry defeats Mertens in Monterrey to claim maiden WTA singles title

On August 29, France's Diane Parry clinched her first WTA singles title in a thrilling Monterrey Open final against Belgium's Elise Mertens. The 23-year-old Parry showcased her resilience and skill, overcoming a strong showing from the 30-year-old Mertens.

In the first set, Parry took an early lead with a 4-1 score, establishing a solid foundation. However, Mertens fought back tenaciously to level the set, showcasing her competitive spirit. Parry's determination shone through as she broke Mertens' serve in the next game, ultimately securing the first set 6-4.

The second set proved to be a more intense battle, with Mertens displaying remarkable dominance. The Belgian won six consecutive games, breaking Parry's serve three times. Parry, however, showed her fighting spirit by taking a medical timeout while trailing 5-0 in the set. Upon returning, Parry regained her momentum, taking control of the deciding set with a commanding 5-1 lead.

Despite Mertens making a valiant effort to narrow the gap, Parry's resilience ultimately paid off as she clinched the match 6-3, securing her maiden WTA singles title just over two and a half hours after the start.

Parry will be facing Swiss tennis sensation Viktorija Golubic in the U.S. Open on Monday.
