‘No alcohol on duty’ — Bagbin warns parliamentary security officers

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has cautioned newly recruited parliamentary security officers against reporting for duty while intoxicated, warning that repeated violations could lead to job loss. The Speaker emphasized the critical nature of maintaining discipline within the parliamentary security establishment, given the sensitive role of protecting the legislative wing of government.

Addressing 69 newly recruited parliamentary assistant security guards during a passing-out ceremony on August 29, Bagbin stressed the importance of professionalism, vigilance, and a strong sense of responsibility for the officers. He specifically warned against allowing social activities to interfere with their official duties, emphasizing that any officer smelling of alcohol upon reporting for duty would face disciplinary action, with a third offense resulting in dismissal.

Bagbin urged the recruits to recognize that their primary responsibility was to safeguard the parliamentary precincts and ensure the safety of lawmakers, staff, visitors, and others accessing the premises. He urged them to remain alert and strictly enforce access-control procedures and other security protocols, warning against complacency in an institution that plays a crucial role in Ghana's democratic framework.

The Speaker also highlighted that the recruits' behavior should mirror the high standards expected of personnel entrusted with the protection of Parliament, noting that their actions would have significant implications for the security of Ghana's democratic institutions.
