Merdeka spirit opens new path for 17-year-old TVET hopeful

In Bukit Mertajam, a 17-year-old girl named Nabila, whose education had been disrupted due to her mother's prolonged illness and financial hardship, has been given a second chance at education. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong revealed that his adopted children, Gabriel Ooi and Sandira, played a pivotal role in helping Nabila resume her studies.

Despite being of different races and religions, Ooi and Sandira stepped forward to lend a hand to Nabila, embodying the spirit of Merdeka – Malaysians standing together for a shared future. The girl's mother had fallen ill four years ago, leading to the loss of her income and family's return to their hometown. With Nabila living with her grandparents, financial troubles forced her to leave school and fall behind in her studies.

Ooi and Sandira, who had completed their education and were still studying, found a TVET college in Sik, Kedah, that offered hostel accommodation, addressing Nabila's transportation concerns. Ooi approached his adoptive children, Gabriel and Sandira, for help. After securing Nabila's agreement and obtaining permissions from her mother and grandparents, they registered her at the college.

Sim pledged to cover Nabila's expenses until she completes her studies. He hopes that Nabila's success will not only benefit her family but also inspire her to become caring and supportive, just like her adoptive siblings. As Malaysia prepares to celebrate its 69th Merdeka, Sim emphasized that the Ooi-Sandira initiative showcased that patriotism goes beyond merely waving the national flag. Merdeka is about Malaysians coming together to work for a shared future.
