Niger says it regains control of airbase after soldiers mutiny

NIAMEY, Niger experienced a tumultuous day on August 30, 2023, as its military regrouped control of a strategic airbase following a mutiny by soldiers. The unrest coincided with a broader struggle against jihadist insurgents in the region. The attack on the airbase highlighted internal tensions within Niger's military, which has faced repeated battlefield losses while combating West African extremist groups.

Government forces successfully repelled the assault on Sunday, after hours of fighting, and residents reported the capital to be calm, with authorities dismantling roadblocks. The airbase, situated alongside Niamey's civilian airport and home to military aircraft and drones, is also a hub for counter-terrorism units and several international forces.

France, Russia, and Italy have provided assistance to Niger, with the latter receiving aid from Algeria in the form of fighter jets and military equipment. This incident was not the first time the airbase was targeted, as it had previously been attacked by regional Islamic State and al Qaeda affiliates in 2023. The Presidential Guard rallied in support of military leader Abdourahamane Tiani, who has had limited public appearances since the incident.

Niger remains a key player in the Sahel region, with Tiani's government shifting away from Western partners and deepening ties with Russia, while simultaneously tightening control over the uranium sector.
