Niger mutiny suppressed, but questions remain over junta's cohesion

Niger's military regime and Russian military partners suppressed a mutiny by soldiers in the capital Niamey on Saturday. The nature of the mutiny remains unclear, as the mutineers did not issue a public statement. Some analysts suggest the soldiers had served on the front lines against jihadists in the south-west. Poor conditions faced by soldiers were cited as a reason for the 2023 coup that brought General Abdourahamane Tiani to power.

The mutineers targeted the Air Force Base 101, an important facility near the international airport, and the junta sought help from Russia's Africa Corps allies. This unprecedented request raised questions about the junta's cohesion and its reliance on Russia. The situation reflects an increasing dependency of Niger on Russia, which had previously focused on combating terrorism.

This is the third instance of violent unrest in Niamey this year, but previous attacks were carried out by jihadists and swiftly repelled. However, the internal threat this time has shaken the military's cohesion. Analysts warn that military coups in West Africa are becoming a structural risk, especially given this first experience of internal dissent for General Tiani's regime since his coup in 2023.
