Nepal-Tibet floods: 750 dead, 20,000 deployed as rising rivers hamper rescue ops

The death toll from the recent floods in Nepal and Tibet has reached 750, as over 3,000 people remain missing. The disaster was caused by a glacier collapse, leading to torrents of ice, rock, mud, and debris sweeping through the Himalayan river systems. The floods have destroyed settlements, bridges, roads, and hydropower infrastructure.

Fresh flood warnings were issued due to rising river levels, with Nepalese authorities urging residents in affected districts to remain alert. Rescue teams are working to clear damaged highway sections and shift populations to higher ground. Rainfall has caused water levels in the Trishuli River to rise, prompting further relocation efforts.

Rescue operations are now focused on individuals trapped in hydropower tunnels. Nepal has requested international assistance for these tunnel rescue efforts, including forensic support, refrigerated body storage, and DNA testing. So far, 8,186 people have been rescued, involving 19,895 security personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force.

The disaster has left 242 people injured, and specialized forensic teams are assisting in identifying bodies. India has sent a fourth relief flight carrying 11 tonnes of supplies, including tunnel technical teams, forensic experts, and essential relief materials.
