Murkomen warns politicians against interfering with IEBC operations

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned politicians against meddling with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election. Speaking during a church service in Uasin Gishu County, Murkomen condemned leaders who sought to play multiple roles – candidates, contractors and referees – regarding the electoral process. He emphasized that no one should interfere with the IEBC's constitutional duties.

Murkomen urged politicians to respect the independence of institutions and security agencies, warning against attempts to assume the roles of these entities. He emphasized that everyone must adhere to their designated responsibilities and not try to assume the roles of IEBC officers or the Inspector General.

In addition, Murkomen addressed the issue of politicians using security forces to disrupt opponents' meetings. He stated that such behavior would not be tolerated, and the security department would take firm action against any individuals attempting to introduce violence into political contests. Murkomen assured that the government would intensify efforts to eradicate illegal firearms from civilian hands.

The Interior CS also criticized the opposition for lacking clear policies, programmes and a vision for the country. He particularly targeted young politicians who focused on slogans and political theatrics rather than presenting concrete plans. Murkomen argued that the opposition's current state, lacking a manifesto or clear direction, would work against it in the upcoming election.

He expressed confidence in President William Ruto's administration, stating that the Kenya Kwanza government had a stronger record of policies and delivery compared to its political opponents.
