Move Over Cafés! Sports Turfs & Pickleball Courts Are Gen Z’s New Hangout Spots In Indore & Bhopal

In Indore and Bhopal, sports turfs and pickleball courts are becoming popular hangout spots for Gen Z, replacing traditional cafés and movie theaters. Artificial cricket and football turfs, numbering around 100 in Indore, are now seen not just as places to play, but also to socialize and unwind. Mradul Saxena, owner of Smash Sports Academy, notes that people are booking turfs for group activities and memories, not just gameplay.

The convenience of artificial turfs, with predictable playing conditions and weather resilience, adds to their appeal. Misting systems have also been introduced to enhance comfort during summer evenings. For 22-year-old Yash Mehta, turf bookings have replaced long café sessions, offering a more active and enjoyable experience.

Pickleball, a fast-paced, social sport, is also gaining traction among Gen Z in both cities. Purvi Saha, an IPS college student, explains its growing popularity due to its simplicity and social nature. The sport's low entry barrier and ease of learning make it attractive for beginners and groups. In Bhopal, venues like House of Dink, Pickle Park, and The Picklers are becoming popular pickleball destinations, blending sports and socializing.

The rise of pickleball is further fueled by its Instagram-friendly nature, with bright courts, coordinated sportswear, and dramatic post-match selfies. The social media appeal makes it an attractive option for young players, offering a fun experience without the full day commitment. A turf booking in Indore costs around ₹1,000 per hour, while pickleball ranges from ₹600 to ₹800 per hour, providing cost-effective alternatives to typical café outings.
