MECC reaffirms commitment to protecting marine biodiversity, whale sharks

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) in Qatar has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to preserving marine biodiversity and the whale shark population within its waters. This commitment was highlighted on International Whale Shark Day, observed annually on August 30th. The ministry emphasized that whale sharks are a crucial element of marine biodiversity, and have been the focus of extensive research initiatives led by the Wildlife Development Department since 2010.

These research efforts have been instrumental in understanding the population structure and individual identification of whale sharks through cutting-edge scientific methods. MECC's commitment is further underscored by their aerial survey operations, which have successfully tracked around 700 whale sharks in a single day, a noteworthy scientific achievement that underscores Qatar's status as a prime congregation point for these majestic creatures.

The ministry's efforts culminated in the publication of Qatar's first whale shark catalog, a comprehensive scientific database that will aid in monitoring the species and informing future research. By providing accurate data on whale shark numbers, population characteristics, and movement patterns, MECC has significantly enhanced its ability to develop and implement effective conservation programs.

MECC has called upon all community members within the country to contribute to the protection of whale sharks by maintaining a clean marine environment, preventing pollution, and refraining from disturbing these creatures in their natural habitats.
