Lagos demolishes illegal structures under high-tension lines

The Lagos State Government has begun the careful demolition of unauthorized buildings situated beneath high-tension electricity lines in Ikola, Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area. This action followed a recent violent incident that resulted in the deaths of four men and injuries to others. Coordination of the operation is being carried out by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Police Command, and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

LASEMA stated that the structures were situated within the designated right-of-way of high-voltage transmission lines, putting occupants and traders at risk of serious safety issues. On Saturday, LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the recent clash between Hausa and Yoruba communities had brought renewed focus to security and environmental issues in the Ikola area, highlighting the dangers posed by informal settlements in close proximity to electricity infrastructure.

These settlements violate safety standards and pose threats of electrocution, fires, and structural failures. Following the violence, government agencies were sent to the community to restore order and protect lives and property. LASEMA, with assistance from the police and RRS, initiated a coordinated operation after providing residents with sufficient notice to vacate and reclaim their belongings.

The operation involved using heavy-duty equipment to dismantle and remove structures from the designated power-line area. LASEMA confirmed that all personnel involved were safe and that the situation remained under control. The permanent secretary emphasized that the intervention was not directed at any specific ethnic group, but rather focused on a dangerous structural situation that threatened everyone in its path.

While acknowledging the need for residents to find new accommodation and livelihoods, he stressed that development should not occur at the expense of people's safety, as sustainable development cannot be achieved if it exposes them to preventable risks.
