Huawei Mate XT 2 Confirmed To Feature An Inward-Folding Design

The Huawei Mate XT 2 is expected to be the official replacement for the Mate XT, according to the Chinese tech giant. Pre-launch rumours suggested that the tri-fold smartphone would adopt a folding mechanism similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Trifold. A video teaser shared by Huawei confirms that the device will indeed feature an inward-folding design.

The teaser, shown in a new purple finish, displays the smartphone unfolding to reveal a new U-shaped design. While the overall appearance resembles Samsung's triple-panel smartphone, the Mate XT 2 differs in several aspects. Most notably, the camera module is positioned on the middle panel, unlike the original design. The folding order has also been flipped, meaning the new design essentially matches the leak previously circulated online.

This significant change from the original Mate XT eliminates the ability to have three distinct screen sizes. Additionally, a separate cover display is necessary to ensure usability when the phone is folded. However, the new design offers an advantage in terms of protection. The flexible inner screen remains safeguarded when the phone is in its folded state, potentially increasing its longevity.

Although Huawei has not disclosed much about the upcoming phone's specifications, leaks suggest the device will be powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro SoC. Other rumored features include a Kirin 9030s chipset, similar to the one found in the recently announced Pura X View, a 6,000mAh battery, and 3D facial recognition. On the imaging front, the Mate XT 2 may come equipped with a 50MP primary shooter, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 40MP ultra-wide sensor.

As always, leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, but Huawei is set to unveil the foldable in China on September 7, 2026.
