Government to connect 206 Volta communities to national grid within six months – Energy Minister

The Ghanaian government announced plans to connect 206 communities in the Volta Region to the national electricity grid within the next six months. This initiative, part of the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP), is being executed by Byes and Ways Limited and overseen by Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor.

The program, an integral component of the government's Big Push initiative, aims to address the electricity access gap and provide developmental opportunities to underserved areas. The government has committed a budget of GH¢598 million to this project in the Volta Region, underscoring the commitment to ensure timely completion and quality work.

Jinapor emphasized the ministry's dedication to monitoring the project's progress closely, ensuring adherence to quality standards and adherence to budgetary constraints. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to connect unelectrified communities across Ghana's regions, with a focus on the Savannah, Central, Oti, and Volta Regions during the current year.

The overarching goal is to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030, ensuring no community is left behind in Ghana's developmental journey. Jinapor urged government officials, traditional authorities, local assemblies, and beneficiary communities to collaborate in facilitating project access, resolving legal challenges, protecting infrastructure, promoting electrical safety, and ensuring prompt payment of electricity bills to sustain the power sector.
