Goons torch vehicle in Linda Mwananchi convoy in Migori amid outcry from leaders

On Saturday, a convoy led by the Linda Mwananchi team was ambushed in Migori, following a rally where tear gas was unleashed. The assailants, hired goons, ignited a fire in the team's vehicle, causing destruction. President William Ruto had previously vowed to confront these goons, asserting that their surging presence in the country's political arena posed a severe threat to national security, especially as the General Election approached.

Ruto tasked security forces with safeguarding Kenyans' constitutional rights to freedom of expression and warned against the misuse of young Kenyans to perpetrate violence. The Head of State also cautioned that politically motivated violence has no place in a democratic nation, and called for firm, lawful, and impartial actions against anyone involved in financing, organizing, inciting, or perpetrating political violence.

Despite the President's warnings, an attack occurred, with multiple vehicles belonging to the Linda Mwananchi convoy being torched in Migori and Awendo. Former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo strongly condemned the violence, emphasizing the intolerable nature of using democratic freedoms as a justification for weaponizing organized crime against different political factions.

She demanded swift action from security agencies to address the national security crisis before it escalated further.
