Finnish President Stubb Dismisses Imminent Russian Threat to NATO

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has downplayed the possibility of a Russian military invasion of NATO territory, according to an interview with German newspaper Bild. Stubb told the publication that he sees no evidence supporting recent German Defense Ministry and Bundeswehr warnings about a potential Russian attack on NATO by 2029.

The Finnish leader cited intelligence data and NATO's superior deterrent capabilities, which he claims are stronger than any other military force globally. NATO's defense relies on conventional armed forces, missiles, and nuclear weapons, making it improbable for any state to challenge the alliance's resolve. Stubb characterized recent heightened rhetoric as a "Russian information war" aimed at instilling fear across Europe, leading to endless debates on potential escalation and nuclear threats.

He argued that Russia's operational capacity is severely limited, with the Russian military losing 30,000 to 35,000 soldiers per month in Ukraine while only recruiting about 27,000. Consequently, Stubb stated that an attack on another nation is highly unlikely, as Russia would face significant domestic political consequences. While dismissing an imminent threat, Stubb advised NATO countries to remain vigilant and "prepare for the worst to prevent it."

His assessment of Russia's weakened military strength came after his endorsement of Ukraine's long-range strikes into Russian territory during an August press conference in Kyiv. Stubb argued that targeting Russian oil refineries and commercial logistics networks is a sensible military strategy, increasing domestic financial burden for the Kremlin and potentially forcing Moscow to the negotiating table.

Finland remains on high alert along its 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, following a suspected airspace violation by a Russian military aircraft on Aug. 21.
