‘A warrior’: How a 97-year-old survived Nepal’s devastating floods

A remarkable 97-year-old woman has emerged from the rubble of a care home in Nepal, her survival amid the devastating flash floods becoming a symbol of hope. Guna Maya Bohara was pulled from the debris after rescuers spent hours searching, her great-nephew describing her as "a warrior" upon her rescue. Images of her, covered in mud and exhausted, being carried to safety have gone viral, turning her survival into one of the most striking stories of the disaster.

While her exact survival method remains unknown, Bohara is currently recovering in a hospital. The floods, triggered by a possible glacier collapse in Nepal's Himalayan border region, have claimed at least 675 lives and left nearly 2,500 people missing across Nepal and Tibet, with a total of 691 confirmed dead and nearly 3,000 still unaccounted for.

Rescue efforts have rescued over 3,700 individuals, but the disaster has left a trail of destruction, including damaged roads, bridges, and power infrastructure. The threat of further flooding from debris-dammed bodies of water persists, adding to the ongoing challenges faced by rescue teams.
