67 vulnerable glacial lakes identified in Himachal

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has identified 67 glacial lakes across the state that pose a vulnerability to GLOFs. Special Secretary, Disaster Management, Pushin Rana stated that efforts were underway to establish early warning systems for the most vulnerable lakes in remote Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti regions. The state is utilizing satellite imagery and scientific data to monitor the lakes for any changes that could increase the risk of GLOFs.

Technical solutions, such as installing sensors and transmitting real-time information, are being explored for locations without conventional communication networks. However, Rana acknowledged that installing such systems in remote areas with no network connectivity remains a significant technological challenge. The government is collaborating with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to develop technological solutions.

In addition to early warning systems, the state is also undertaking High Flood Level (HFL) marking in downstream areas that could be affected by sudden water releases. Regular monitoring and community awareness are key components of the preparedness strategy. Rana emphasized the importance of international collaboration, given the Himalayan river systems and glacial landscapes extend beyond national borders, involving around 1,000 such lakes within the Indian side of the border.
