Zimbabwe minibus carrying church members crashes, killing at least 27

On Friday, a minibus taxi transporting members of a church group collided with a truck in Zimbabwe, resulting in 27 fatalities, according to a police spokesperson. This latest road accident to strike the southern African nation underscores the country's notoriously poor road safety record. The minibus taxi, driven by adherents of a popular indigenous African Christian denomination wearing white robes, was en route to a conference when the mishap occurred near Chivhu town, approximately 82 miles south of Harare.

The truck had attempted to overtake another vehicle at the time of the crash, which took place on a major highway and led to a fiery explosion of the minibus. The truck was hauling an unspecified number of passengers. State broadcaster ZBC News reported that 23 people perished at the scene, while additional victims succumbed to their wounds in a local hospital.

The minibus taxi was severely damaged and left in ruins following the collision, as depicted in photographs released by local media. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that both vehicles were carrying a large number of passengers. Road accidents involving overloaded buses, minibus taxis, and unregulated sedan taxis are frequent occurrences in Zimbabwe, often attributed to reckless driving and subpar road infrastructure.

The nation ranks among the world's most dangerous in terms of road safety, with 94% of accidents attributed to human error, as per official data. Globally, road crashes claim approximately 300,000 lives each year, accounting for about a quarter of all fatalities, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Despite comprising just 3% of the world's vehicle fleet, the continent bears this disproportionate burden, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
