Zimbabwe crash involving church minibus kills 27

A minibus carrying churchgoers crashed head-on with a truck in central Zimbabwe, resulting in at least 27 fatalities, according to police reports released on Saturday. The catastrophic collision occurred around 1830 GMT on Friday near Chivhu, a location situated approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of the nation's capital, Harare. The foreign-registered truck, which was overtaking another vehicle at the time, ended up colliding with the minibus that was transporting worshippers en route to a conference.

Both vehicles were carrying an unspecified number of passengers, as reported by police. Seven individuals suffered injuries in the unfortunate incident. Footage shared via social media by the country's public broadcaster, ZBC, depicted the minibus reduced to a charred wreck, while the truck came to rest on the opposite side of the road. The crash took place in a flat, remote stretch of road, with sparse vegetation lining the roadside and expansive open terrain further beyond.

Road accidents are a persistent issue in Zimbabwe, where roads are plagued by potholes due to years of inadequate funding and maintenance, and driving standards are often subpar. For daily transportation, many Zimbabweans rely on privately operated minibus taxis, locally referred to as kombi. However, these taxis frequently face criticism for overloading their passengers.

In April, a minibus caught fire on a highway in the south, killing at least 18 people. Earlier in the same month, a woman and her five children lost their lives when their vehicle collided with a haulage truck on another highway linking Zimbabwe and South Africa.
