Your age mates left politics: MP David Ochieng tells Orengo to quit

Ugenya Member of Parliament David Ochieng has criticized Siaya Governor James Orengo, urging him to step aside and make way for younger politicians. At a fundraiser on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Ochieng, who leads the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party, stated that many of Orengo's contemporaries have already left active politics.

He noted that Orengo, who claims to be the most senior politician in the country, should recognize that his age peers have moved on. Ochieng highlighted that leaders like Mukhisa Kituyi, Gitobu Imanyara, Kiraitu Muriungi, Musikari Kombo, and Martin Shikuku have also exited the political stage.

The MP further accused Orengo of abandoning democratic values by not respecting the rights of supporters of President William Ruto to campaign freely in Nyanza. Ochieng emphasized that principles of democratic reform should be upheld, regardless of political affiliation, and challenged Orengo to allow Kenyans to support and campaign for leaders of their choosing without political intolerance.

The remarks come as political tensions rise in Nyanza, where some leaders allied with President Ruto face resistance while promoting the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ochieng argued that Nyanza cannot afford to remain hostile towards the government and urged leaders to focus on collaboration for regional development and economic opportunities. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, the chief guest, warned against political violence, accusing some leaders of assembling armed groups that intimidate and harm civilians.

Mbadi cautioned leaders, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable and could lead to severe consequences. Ochieng's call for Orengo to retire from politics adds to the emerging generational debate about the future leadership of Nyanza.
