Trade, defence and bilateral ties: What’s on PM Modi’s Uzbekistan visit agenda

From August 29 to September 1, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a significant four-day diplomatic journey to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. This visit aims to deepen India's strategic ties with Central Asia, an important region for the nation's broader geopolitical interests.

During his visit, Modi will commence with a state visit to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from August 29 to 30. He will be hosted by Uzbekistan's President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. This marks Modi's fourth visit to Uzbekistan, during which he will engage in bilateral talks with Uzbek officials to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Topics for discussion will range from trade and investment to defense, digital connectivity, energy, and education. The leaders will also align their long-term growth roadmaps, linking India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision with Uzbekistan's Uzbekistan-2030 strategy.

Following his time in Tashkent, Modi will travel to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31 and September 1. The SCO summit is of particular significance, as it marks the 25th anniversary of the organization, of which India has been a full member since 2017.

Modi will address the SCO assembly, outlining India's strategic priorities, which include security, connectivity, and opportunity. In addition to the summit, he will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games. This event celebrates Central Asia's rich cultural heritage, reflecting India's commitment to fostering regional cooperation and understanding.

The tour underscores New Delhi's ongoing efforts to expand its strategic footprint, promote economic integration, and enhance security alliances across Central Asia.
