Tiny Elversberg stun Leverkusen on Bundesliga debut, Dortmund beat Hamburg

Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg secured an impressive 3-2 victory over 2023-24 champions Bayer Leverkusen in their debut top-flight match. Elversberg's Lukas Petkov and American striker Cole Campbell scored within the first 60 seconds of each other to create a 2-0 lead before the 10-minute mark. David Mokwa added another goal in the second half.

Despite Leverkusen putting up a fight with goals from Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane, Elversberg's underdog status proved too much for the established team. Elversberg, with a population of just 13,000, is the smallest town ever to have a German top-flight side, and only 9,307 fans witnessed the surprise win in their still-under-construction home ground.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund defeated Hamburg with a 2-0 home win on Saturday's late game. However, the victory was marred by a potential serious injury to impressive debutant Giannis Konstantelias, who pulled up with a left knee problem midway through the second half. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac expressed concern over Konstantelias' injury, stating, "The complete diagnosis will come tomorrow, but the doctor told me it doesn't look good."
