Time to put Malaysia Day ahead of National Day, says political scientist

Political scientist Datuk Prof Dr Jayum Jawan has suggested that Malaysia Day on September 16 should take precedence over National Day on August 31 to better reflect the nation's ongoing nation-building efforts. While National Day remains significant as a symbol of independence, Dr Jayum argues that greater emphasis should be placed on Malaysia's diverse historical and social makeup as the country progresses.

He contends that concentrating solely on Aug 31 ignores the multiplicity of experiences that contribute to Malaysia's national identity. Dr Jayum emphasizes that the concept of 'Merdeka' (independence) must evolve to encompass the quality of governance and leadership. He points to recent governance issues in Malaysia, citing the need for new, unifying leaders to address these challenges.

To restore public trust, Dr Jayum advocates for diversification and cleansing of institutional governance, aiming to rebuild integrity and transparency. While Sarawak may not be directly involved in corruption scandals, Dr Jayum urges the state to consider governance and economic opportunity disparities. He urges Sarawak to ensure that wealth and opportunities are distributed equitably to foster unity among all communities.

Ultimately, Dr Jayum contends that the essence of Merdeka lies in transforming Malaysia's freedom into an inclusive identity, clean governance, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
