Tadej Pogacar abandons Vuelta a Espana after nasty crash on stage eight

Six-time grand tour champion Tadej Pogacar, the current leader of the Vuelta a Espana, has abandoned the race after a severe crash during stage eight. The Slovenian cyclist, who was the favorite to win this prestigious event and had yet to claim a victory, had led by nearly four minutes over Movistar’s Enric Mas before the incident.

With under 30km remaining in the race, Pogacar swerved suddenly within the main group of riders and crashed violently, causing a chain reaction that left several others tumbling. Despite his initial attempt to stand up and continue, the impact left him with a painful shoulder injury and a contusion to his face. He was quickly assisted by medical staff and taken away in an ambulance, marking a significant setback for the race's lone remaining favorite.

This is the first time Pogacar has withdrawn from a grand tour, and it's the first time he's abandoned a race since he broke his wrist in Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2023.
