Summerland’s Twisted Whiskers closing as owner says wildfire added to business struggles

The thrift store and café in Summerland, B.C., known as Twisted Whiskers, will permanently close in December after facing two years of business challenges and a disrupted summer season due to the Bald Range wildfire. Owner Jules Zest had already been contemplating closing the business prior to the fire but found the difficulties of the summer period made the decision more feasible.

Zest aimed to create a space for socializing, shopping, and art-making, but maintaining a small business proved challenging. The summer season is crucial for small businesses as strong sales can help them survive the rest of the year. However, the wildfire occurred during this vital period, causing Zest to worry about the future of her business and the return of customers post-fire.

Many of her customers traditionally came from outside Summerland, making tourism vital for her business. Zest expressed that when she inquired with customers over the last two years, almost all were non-residents. Volunteer Brett Ziegler noted that the store's fluctuating status of opening and closing was common. He emphasized that merely supporting local businesses doesn't suffice; efforts must be made to ensure local patronage.

Local shoppers, such as South Okanagan resident Michelle Raynier, face difficulties spending locally due to tight household budgets. Local leaders, including MLA Amelia Boultbee, are encouraging residents to support the community during the summer months. Twisted Whiskers will operate as a thrift store and café for the last time in September, with Zest planning to hold glass fusing workshops in October, November, and December before closing permanently.
