Solid, proven and upmarket Mazda CX-30 still lacks in key area

The Mazda CX-30, a solid and upmarket compact SUV, has gone through minimal changes since its global debut seven years ago. The model, positioned between the CX-3 and CX-5, has not received any dramatic updates since its introduction. However, a second generation is still years away, with CEO Masahiro Moro stating that the Hiroshima factory will only debut a follow-up by the 2030 fiscal year. This confirms that more revisions and updates will be made to the CX-30 in the coming years.

Upon its release in South Africa in early 2021, the CX-30 received a refresh two years ago, which involved a revision of its specification sheet. Earlier this year, the model became the second after the CX-5 to offer the Carbon appearance package. This upgrade surpassed the mid-range Dynamic variant, and the CX-30's Dynamic variant received a few subtler upgrades, including an improved MZD Connect infotainment system.

Although the CX-30's Platinum Quartz paint option, one of seven available, isn't to everyone's taste, it still offers good value for money compared to the base Active variant. The less-than-attractive paint option doesn't detract from the car's overall appeal, as it maintains a modern and classic look thanks to Mazda's Kodo design language. Mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels, the CX-30's compact and squat profile still makes it stand out among rivals.

Inside, the CX-30 features a classy and premium interior that exudes quality without being overly cluttered with functions. The 10.25-inch infotainment system, although lacking a touchscreen interface as initially claimed, remains easy to navigate with its rotary dial, centre console buttons, and other shortcut controls. The cloth seats, sound system, and analogue instrument cluster all contribute to a pleasant driving experience. With a usable 295-litre boot space, the CX-30 offers practicality that justifies its price tag.
