Ruto announces Ksh4B Malaba smart city project

President William Ruto has announced that the Kenyan government will invest Ksh4 billion in a new smart city project in Malaba, Busia County. The smart city will feature 2,000 affordable housing units, as well as other amenities, aiming to generate jobs and business opportunities for local residents while attracting investors to the border town.

Speaking to a delegation of grassroots leaders from the Iteso community at the Eldoret State Lodge in Uasin Gishu County, Ruto emphasized the need to upgrade Malaba from a mere shopping center to a modern, well-designed city. The government has set aside Ksh18 billion for the construction of affordable houses, modern markets, and student hostels in Busia County.

Nationwide, the Affordable Housing Programme has already created jobs for 1.1 million people, including professionals in various fields. Ruto also commended Busia County leaders for educating residents on the importance of registering with the Social Health Authority, noting that 449,000 people – 50% of the county's population – have already registered.

The King of the Teso community, His Royal Highness Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng III, installed President Ruto as an elder and bestowed upon him the name Ojokotau, meaning "someone with a big heart." Ruto reiterated his commitment to uniting Kenyans and shifting the focus from tribal politics to policy-based politics ahead of the 2024 General Election.
