Rescue operations continue in Nepal, China after floods

Rescue efforts in Nepal and China persist as they search for thousands of people missing after a devastating flood similar to a tsunami swept through the Himalayan region. The death toll surpassed 2,400, with 586 bodies recovered, some as far as India. In Tibet, Chinese authorities halted rescue operations due to fears of additional flooding before reversing the decision.

Survivors from affected areas described their situation as dire, with many losing everything and awaiting news on their loved ones. Nepal's disaster authority added 933 hydropower workers to the missing list, including trekkers and pilgrims. The trauma of the catastrophe has been immense, potentially affecting 93,000 people, according to the Red Cross.

Emergency teams faced challenges retrieving survivors due to widespread devastation and concerns about further flooding. Nepali police urged rescuers to move to safe locations, citing a possible dam burst on the Tibetan side. Chinese state news reported two villagers rescued, while Nepal's military located people in a tunnel of a hydropower project, evacuating over a hundred.

Nepal seeks foreign help in specialized areas like tunnel rescue, bridge restoration, and body identification, but not in general search and rescue.
