QC launches urgent response to Nepal’s flash flood disaster

Qatar Charity (QC) has pledged an immediate humanitarian response to the catastrophic floods that ravaged Nepal on Wednesday. The organization swiftly activated its Emergency Response Cell and will distribute essential supplies like blankets to those impacted. The Crisis and Information Centre remains vigilant, closely tracking the evolving humanitarian crisis.

QC maintains constant communication with its field office in Nepal, relying on coordination with Nepalese authorities and monitoring humanitarian efforts in the affected regions. The most pressing needs of the flood victims include ready-to-eat hot meals, mattresses, blankets, emergency medical care, infant formula, and emergency shelter.

According to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 10,000 families urgently require aid. Tragically, 165 bodies have been recovered, 247 people are still missing, and 73 are injured. The floods have inflicted severe damage, destroying 35 motorable and 45 suspension bridges, as well as at least 40km of paved roads.

Limited accessibility due to heavy rainfall and challenging terrain is impeding search and rescue operations. The US Geological Survey classified the disaster as a debris avalanche and flash flood, likely caused by a rapid slope failure involving a glacier. Additionally, a secondary seismic event occurred roughly three hours after the initial disaster.
