Public funds must be protected despite criticism over government action - PM

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that investigations into alleged public fund losses must be evidence-based, with guilt determined only by courts. The priority, Anwar stated, is to determine what happened to the funds, when the loss occurred, and who is responsible. He stressed that taking action does not equate to guilt, but rather ensuring a proper investigation is conducted before any legal proceedings.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, highlighted that an RM12 billion loss was reported and underscored the importance of understanding how it happened, when it occurred, and who allowed it to transpire. He added that the government's approach to such issues often presents a dilemma, as inaction could lead to further losses while taking action may invite criticism.

Anwar's remarks came during the launch of the Skim Usahawan Bangkit Madani Permatang Pauh at Yayasan Aman, Penanti. He pointed out that protecting public funds was about ensuring Malaysia's resources reached the people and delivered intended benefits, noting that Malaysia was not without resources, but leakages persist in ensuring wealth reaches grassroots levels.

Anwar reiterated the government's commitment to strengthen governance and prevent leakages, despite facing criticism, as safeguarding the country's and people's interests remains paramount.
