Probe must be comprehensive after family alleges pupil with heart condition was made to run, says sports minister

Alor Setar, Aug 29 — Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari has demanded an exhaustive inquiry into the case of an 11-year-old girl who allegedly passed away due to a heart condition following claims she was compelled to participate in a sports event by a teacher. He expressed the Ministry's sympathy and condolences to the parents and family of the deceased, Nur Qaira Alisha Ahmad ‘Ilwan.

According to Taufiq, the Youth and Sports Ministry received the grievance lodged by the girl's family about the incident that took place on April 14 at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Pak Kiau.

Taufiq emphasized that the entire incident must be scrutinized thoroughly, transparently, and with integrity, leaving no detail unexplored, and granting all parties involved the chance to give their statements and interpretations. He assured the girl's family of a proper, comprehensive, and fact-based explanation of the events. If the investigation uncovers any negligence, violation of regulations, or misconduct, the necessary action must be taken firmly, adhering to the applicable laws and regulations.

Taufiq stressed that when it comes to the safety and welfare of students, such matters should not be taken lightly or compromised on any identified weaknesses.

The minister also stressed that the investigation must be conducted fairly and professionally, without reaching any conclusions before all the facts have been established and examined. During this painful period, Taufiq urged the family to receive the support they need, granting them strength, patience, and resilience to confront this immense challenge.
