PM tegas akta warisan penjajah sekat mahasiswa harus dihapus

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need to remove colonial-era laws that restrict student freedom, in order to ensure the essence of independence can be fully experienced. He stated that students must be given space to express their opinions and engage in activities more freely, as they are the generation that will determine the future of the nation.

Last week, at a university level, he announced the repeal of university statutes that curtail and clutter student activities. Some parents were against the move, while young people needed to understand the limitations. Freedom does not mean unlimited power; this is a legal nation. However, the Prime Minister disagreed with adding more laws to restrict and intimidate students, as this is a free country and colonial-era laws must be abolished.

He said during the Kemuncak Ambang Merdeka Sahabat Madani 2026 summit at UiTM Permatang Pauh today, that young people need to be given confidence to voice their views and ideas, including when mistakes occur, which can be corrected through proper channels. The Prime Minister said this approach is vital in forming a bold, responsible, and capable generation of youth to contribute to Malaysia's development as a truly free nation.

Independence is not just freedom from physical colonization, he added, but also means people have the space to determine the future of their own nation. Furthermore, the youth generation must understand the history of the independence struggle and build a new history by leading Malaysia to a greater and respected level on the international stage.
