Plateau seals gas station, prosecutes sanitation offenders

The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) took enforcement action against a gas station in Kufang area, Jos South Local Government, on Saturday. The agency, during the statewide sanitation exercise, sealed the gas station and fined several local residents for contravening the state's environmental laws.

The operation was part of a broader effort to enforce compliance with sanitation regulations across the state's 17 local governments, following a recent cholera outbreak. PEPSA's Director of Enforcement, Barnabas Pam, said security agencies assisted in arresting offenders between 7 am and 10 am. Offenders were prosecuted, fined, and the gas station was sealed.

Pam emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness, citing the recent cholera outbreak as a reminder of the need for proper sanitation. PEPSA plans to continue enforcement until compliance becomes habitual among residents, not just a monthly activity. PEPSA will collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and other security agencies to enforce movement restrictions and other environmental regulations during sanitation hours.
