PH ready to begin Melaka seat talks with BN

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan (PH) has expressed readiness to commence seat negotiations with Barisan Nasional (BN) regarding the upcoming Melaka election, yet these discussions are contingent upon several policy decisions made by Umno and BN at the central level. Amirudin Shari, the PH election director, disclosed that he has been in dialogue with Ab Rauf Yusoh, the Melaka BN chairman, who shared his intention to initiate discussions only after the aforementioned decisions have been made.

Following Rauf's comments, Amirudin informed reporters at a press conference, stating that he had already communicated with him regarding the matter. This development follows Amirudin's earlier assertion that PH could finalize its stance on electoral cooperation with BN prior to Malaysia Day on September 16th. The Selangor Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) emphasized that PH remains open to dialogues and urged both parties to engage in negotiations with sincerity.

He highlighted PH's previous willingness to compromise, including facilitating BN's contesting of seats that PH had won in Selangor, which demonstrated their honest approach during negotiations. When asked if PH would consider engaging in contests beyond the 21 constituencies projected for Melaka, Amirudin responded that these additional seats were indeed potential targets, yet he refrained from making an early decision without the commencement of actual negotiations.

He affirmed that these are the seats PH should target, but the final decision would be contingent upon the outcomes of the ongoing discussions. Amirudin also cautioned against parties imposing conditions before the initiation of negotiations, as such demands would complicate the cooperation process. He stressed that political parties ought to be prepared for diverse possibilities, emphasizing that any form of collaboration should be grounded in sincerity and a firm commitment to preserving the stability and prosperity fostered under the unity government.

The unity government was established in the aftermath of the political turmoil that ensued following the Sheraton Move, and Amirudin cautioned against repeating such divisions, asserting the necessity of forming a stable government. The Melaka state assembly's five-year tenure concludes in December 2026, with the state election potentially taking place as early as September.

The BN had secured all 28 seats in the last Melaka election and had governed independently prior to BN inviting PH into the state administration to emulate the federal unity coalition. However, this arrangement dissolved in July following the resignation of PH's five assemblymen and their withdrawal of support after the BN-led government enacted a legislation permitting up to seven unelected members to be appointed to the state assembly.
