Nurulhidayah rules out Parliament bid while father Zahid is MP

Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's daughter, has stated she will not contest a parliamentary seat while her father remains an MP. This stance is rooted in her father's principle that Parliament should not be a family domain. She expressed her commitment to this principle, respecting her father's views.

Instead, she hinted at the possibility of running for the state assembly seat. Zahid, also serving as deputy prime minister, has represented Bagan Datuk in the Dewan Rakyat since 1995. This scenario is not unique, as there have been instances of family members serving concurrently in the Dewan Rakyat, such as Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng, and Karpal Singh and Gobind Singh Deo.

Despite the legal troubles affecting several BN leaders, Nurulhidayah emphasized the necessity of strengthening Barisan Nasional's machinery for the upcoming election. She stressed that the party machinery should continue its role to secure victory for BN, even if it involves working with other political parties. Her remarks followed MIC deputy president M Saravanan's allegation of receiving bribes worth RM1.097 million linked to foreign worker quota approvals.
