New ‘KE’ number plates hit Kenyan roads as NTSA moves on from ‘KD’ series

Kenyan motorists are now seeing vehicles with 'KE' registration number plates, signaling the next step in the country's vehicle registration sequence after the previous 'KD' series. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is moving forward, but the new 'KE' plates do not mark a new registration system's launch. There was no official ceremony or public unveiling of the KE plates; they are issued through the usual vehicle-registration process.

Motorists with ongoing applications may receive vehicles with the new prefix. The change simply means the next stage in Kenya's registration sequence, as all available numbers in the KD series have been used. The KE plates are part of Kenya's modern reflective number plates, not indicating new technology or enforcement. Kenya continues to register a large number of new motor vehicles, with 207,259 registered between January and June 2026.

This high registration volume has created demand for new registration combinations, leading to the progression from one series to another. While some motorists may want to reserve numbers like KEG or KES, the ordinary registration process assigns numbers sequentially, not based on popularity. NTSA handles special requests separately, and customised plates have their own rules.

The NTSA is also considering auctioning highly sought-after registration numbers, but this is separate from the current KE rollout. Existing KD-registered vehicles do not need to change their plates; the KE prefix only applies to new registrations. The KE prefix is part of Kenya's history of registration series, following KAA, KBA, KCA, and KDA, with KEA representing the next chapter in this sequence.
