Nearly RM250,000 payout after Segambut jogger fractures spine while fending off neighbour’s German Shepherds

A five-year-old incident involving two German Shepherds in Segambut has resulted in a significant damages payout. Datuk Seri Ong Thiam Boon, the owner of the dogs, will pay nearly RM250,000 to his neighbor, Datuk Mohd Kamal Abdullah. The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court found Ong liable for the February 10, 2021 incident, ordering him to pay RM178,457.60 in special damages and RM70,000 in general damages.

The court also ordered Ong to pay 5% annual interest on the damages from the date of judgment until full settlement. In the incident, Mohd Kamal was jogging at Taman Anjung Tiara when he claims two dogs belonging to Ong attacked him, causing him to fall and fracture his spine. He required surgery and ongoing treatment. Ong denies the dogs attacked him and argues that Mohd Kamal's injuries were caused by his own negligence. The court dismissed Ong's counterclaim, and he must also pay Mohd Kamal RM15,000 in costs.
