The proposal is set to be discussed during a meeting of the Metro Nashville Airport Authority on September 17. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee expressed his admiration for Parton, stating that her "extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state."

The idea to rename the airport gained traction following the announcement of Parton's death, with a Change.org petition collecting over 160,000 signatures in support of the cause. The petition's momentum was further boosted when celebrities like Sheryl Crow and Katie Couric shared it on social media. Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Nashville Airport Authority, emphasized the airport's role as the "front door to Music City" and highlighted the importance of welcoming travelers from all backgrounds with the same care and dignity that Parton embodied.

While most airports in the U.S. are named after presidents and politicians, Parton joins a select group of celebrities and cultural figures to receive such recognition. Notable examples include Louis Armstrong, whose name adorns the airport in New Orleans, and John Wayne, whose name is tied to Orange County's airport.
