Modrzewski throws 6 TD passes in college debut and South Dakota beats Central Connecticut 59-20

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Austyn Modrzewski made history in his first college game with a record-setting six touchdown passes and the South Dakota Coyotes dominated Central Connecticut 59-20 in their season opener. This first annual payment, billed at $205.00 plus GST for one year, automatically renews every 52 weeks at $233.00 plus GST.

Modrzewski, a redshirt freshman, completed 16 of his 20 passes for 304 yards and added 81 yards on two carries, including another touchdown. Coach Matt Vitzthum, leading the No. 12 ranked Coyotes for the first time, witnessed a dominant performance from his team. South Dakota's Charles Pierre Jr., a Walter Payton Award candidate, returned from an injury that kept him out of all but the first two games of the previous season and rushed for 77 yards on 10 carries.

Keyondray Jones-Logan contributed 103 yards on two catches with a touchdown for the Coyotes in a game where the Blue Devils scored only 20 points. After going three-and-out on their opening drive, the Coyotes scored touchdowns on their next eight possessions, with six coming in the first half to give them a 42-10 halftime lead. The Keystone State onslaught included Modrzewski's 68-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter followed by his 61-yard touchdown pass to Jones-Logan on the Coyotes' next play.

However, Central Connecticut responded with a 30-yard field goal before the fourth quarter. Connor Kenyon completed 9 of 18 passes for 81 yards with a touchdown for the Blue Devils. Central Connecticut, the conference coaches' choice again this season, faced their fourth year under coach Adam Lechtenberg. South Dakota will next take on Northern Colorado on Saturday.
