Microsoft Made $24.1 Billion From OpenAI in 2026. Investors Still Can’t See One Crucial Number

Microsoft Corporation, through its fiscal 2026 10-K filing, revealed that it generated $24.1 billion in revenue from its partnership with OpenAI. This figure includes revenue-sharing payments and accounts for the company's 25% ownership interest in OpenAI, as well as ongoing revenue-sharing arrangements. However, Microsoft has not disclosed the profit generated by these OpenAI commercial arrangements.

The focus on this $24.1 billion figure highlights the scale of the relationship between the two companies, but it does not provide insight into the profitability of this collaboration. Microsoft Cloud's gross margin declined to 66% due to increased investments in AI infrastructure and the growing usage of AI products. As of August 14, approximately 68.54 million Microsoft shares were sold short, representing about 0.92% of the public float and with a 2.1-day coverage ratio.
