OpenAI to end Cursor partnership after SpaceX acquisition

OpenAI has announced it will end its partnership with AI coding platform Cursor following Elon Musk's acquisition of the company via SpaceX, Bloomberg reported. OpenAI informed Cursor of its intent to terminate the contract by November 12, citing concerns over SpaceX's potential compliance with technology usage terms. OpenAI stated that they cannot be confident SpaceX will adhere to their service terms, given the company's history of violating contracts.

This decision marks the end of a relationship between two major players in the rapidly expanding AI-powered software development tools market. Cursor, developed by Anysphere, has gained popularity among programmers for integrating AI into coding workflows. The acquisition of Cursor by SpaceX, under Elon Musk's control, follows Musk's history of contentious relationships with OpenAI.

Musk co-founded the AI company in 2015 before leaving and has since become a vocal critic. Musk's AI startup, xAI, competes with OpenAI and other major AI developers. OpenAI has not disclosed how the termination might impact Cursor users or which of its technologies will be discontinued after the deadline. The move comes amid growing competition in AI coding, with technology giants and startups racing to develop tools that can create, review, and modify software code.

OpenAI has also been enhancing its own coding offerings as AI developers increasingly focus on software development as a key commercial use case for their models.
