Mamata Banerjee booked for alleged High Court order breach at student wing event

The Kolkata police have filed a suo moto case against former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly breaching the Calcutta High Court orders during a Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing foundation day event. According to the police, Banerjee's supporters violated the court's directions by blocking both sides of Cathedral Road, causing chaos, disrupting traffic, and continuing the program beyond the allotted time.

The police also filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) organizers.

On Tuesday, a single bench of the Calcutta High Court permitted both factions of the party to hold separate foundation day events on Friday, stating that one road flank should not be blocked. Mamata Banerjee's TMC was granted permission to hold the rally at Cathedral Road, while Ritobrata Banerjee's faction was allowed to hold it at Rani Rashmoni. The event was scheduled between noon and 3 pm.

The police allege that Banerjee conspired with TMCP and incited her supporters during the event. They claim that the crowd pushed aside barricades and clashed with police personnel enforcing law and order. Banerjee has been booked under various sections, including criminal conspiracy, using force against a government worker to impede their duties, and causing hurt by acting recklessly or negligently, potentially endangering human life.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the police would take action against those who violated the court order on Friday.
