Lewis Holtby credits Thomas Tuchel’s empathy as key influence on future coaching career

Former German international Lewis Holtby, preparing to launch a coaching career post-retirement this summer, has named Thomas Tuchel as a key influence on his development. Speaking to Kicker, the 35-year-old credited Tuchel with helping him become a Germany international during the 2010/11 Bundesliga season at Mainz. Holtby will begin working towards his DFB B and A coaching licenses.

His ambition to become a coach is not new, but Holtby found Tuchel's empathetic nature particularly important in his development. Holtby explained that Tuchel knew exactly when to push him hard and when to offer encouragement, such as a hug or joke. The former Mainz player also highlighted other influential coaches, including Schalke's Felix Magath, who lacked Tuchel's empathy, and Christian Titz, whose ability to make individual players better was significant.

Holtby emphasized the importance of creating a strong locker room environment, similar to a family, and fostering open communication. He also reflected on how his rapid rise to fame during his youth could have hindered his ability to make rational, reflective decisions. Holtby believes that coaches should prioritize players' well-being and personal development before focusing on tactics.
