Lagos to deploy 220 trucks for waste evacuation — Hamzat

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat announced plans to deploy an additional 220 trucks to supplement the state's waste evacuation system. This announcement came shortly after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed that the state would soon receive 150 compactor trucks to address waste management. During a press conference in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Hamzat emphasized that these new trucks would work alongside the existing Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection system.

He explained that the surge in population had led to an increase in waste generation, making the additional trucks crucial for managing the growing waste volume. Hamzat urged residents to patronize PSP and refrain from using cart pushers, as the latter often end up disposing of waste improperly. He also stressed the importance of community involvement in maintaining cleanliness, encouraging residents to organize regular environmental sanitation exercises.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, expressed satisfaction with the progress in waste management, attributing it to emergency response teams and landfill management efforts. Wahab outlined the government's shift from a linear waste management system to a circular system, aiming to recover and utilize waste resources.

He also addressed concerns about cart pushers, expressing a commitment to ensuring security while encouraging their engagement in proper waste disposal practices.
