Lagos demolishes shanties after four die in community clash

The Lagos State government has begun the controlled demolition of informal structures and shanties built beneath high-tension electricity lines in the Ikola community of Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area. This action follows a recent communal clash that resulted in four deaths, highlighting the safety risks posed by such settlements.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, working alongside the Lagos State Police Command and the Rapid Response Squad, is overseeing the operation. LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the clash between Hausa and Yoruba communities underscored the dangers posed by these informal settlements, which violate safety standards and endanger residents through risks like electrocution, fire, and structural collapse.

The government emphasized that the demolition was not directed at any particular ethnic group but aimed to eliminate structural hazards threatening the entire community. Residents were given notice to evacuate and retrieve their belongings before the demolition began, demonstrating a balanced approach that respects their rights while prioritizing safety.

The government pledged to maintain cooperation with community leaders and stakeholders to promote peace and adherence to urban planning regulations.
