Lagos demolishes shanties after four die in community clash

The Lagos State Government has begun the controlled demolition of shanties and informal structures built beneath high-tension electricity lines in the Ikola community, located in Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area. This action follows a recent communal clash that resulted in four deaths, highlighting the safety risks posed by such settlements.

The demolition, coordinated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Police Command, and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), aims to eliminate these hazards. LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the recent conflict between Hausa and Yoruba communities brought attention to the security and environmental challenges in the area, emphasizing that these settlements contravene safety standards and expose residents to risks like electrocution and fire outbreaks.

The operation began after residents were given adequate notice, allowing them to evacuate and retrieve their belongings. The government stressed that the demolition is not targeted at any ethnic group but is aimed at addressing the dangerous structural situation that threatens everyone living in the area. LASEMA will use heavy recovery equipment to remove the structures within the statutory right-of-way of the power lines.

The government aims to balance residents' rights to shelter and livelihood with the responsibility of preventing avoidable deaths and will continue to engage with community leaders and stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence and compliance with urban planning regulations.
