Lagos condemns viral video mocking bedwetting child

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has strongly condemned a viral video showing a child being publicly ridiculed for bedwetting. The agency described the incident as a clear case of verbal and emotional abuse, emphasizing that bedwetting should never be a reason to shame, humiliate or expose a child to ridicule.

The video, posted on a social media platform, showed several women teasing a young boy in traditional attire, appearing to identify themselves as the boy's relatives. The child appeared uncomfortable as the women surrounded him, hugged him, lifted him and laughed. One woman even waved cash during the episode. The audio repeatedly featured the women saying "I'm not the bedwetter," with one admitting "I am the bedwetter" before the group chanted "We have caught him, bedwetter."

The DSVA stated that the behavior amounted to a clear violation of child protection standards, stressing that children need to be raised in secure and supportive environments, especially when dealing with situations beyond their control. The agency urged adults responsible for raising children to protect their emotional and psychological wellbeing, rather than becoming the source of their pain.
